9 – RETURN OF THE CHRIST

After several years in the organization of Theosophy, Alice Bailey came back to her faith in Christ. She saw that God had a plan for her, as well as for the rest of humanity. In her writings Bailey expressed a vision of preparing for the Return of Christ. In her idealistic view, human society should aim to work towards learning to rule itself, and apparently, many of her ideas were adopted in the formation of the United Nations.

We can see now that the UN has not done such a great job of bringing peace to the world. But the movement was necessary, if for no other reason than to show that the forces of Darkness will never allow human society to bring about a just and peaceful world situation. Except for a few individuals, the rich and powerful will never allow the rise of a benevolent ruling order in which they are supposed to share their wealth and influence with the rest of the world.

Much as Alice Bailey would have preferred a new enlightened world order to be established by peaceful means, we can see now, in how ineffective the UN has become, that it will never happen. It will take nothing less than the forceful overthrow of the ruling world order, as described in the pages of the Book of Revelation about the Second Coming:

“The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.”…
“We give thanks to you, Lord God, the Almighty, the one who is and who always was, for now you have assumed your great power and have begun to reign. The nations were filled with wrath, but now the time of your wrath has come. It is time to judge the dead and reward  your servants the prophets, as well as your holy people, and all who fear your name, from the least to the greatest. It is time to destroy all who have caused destruction on the earth.”
(Revelation 11:15,17-18; NLT)

For the rich and powerful will never voluntarily share with the rest of the world. A glaring example from recent history highlights this all to well. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990’s, there arose great hope in the world that peace and an end to the Cold War were now in sight. And what happened? Instead of using this golden opportunity to work towards a peaceful world situation, the ruling powers in the United States merely saw this as an opportunity to squeeze Russia for its wealth and to weaken its power structure with the intent of giving America complete control over the world.

Only through Christ’s Return can human society ever hope to govern itself. Only then will it be possible for righteousness, mercy, peace, and justice to reign supreme. There is much in Alice Bailey’s writings about the “Return of the Christ”. And indeed, she is quite right to look forward to that great, monumental event of the not-so-distant future.

Her interest in the subject of Christ’s Return probably arose from her experience with Theosophists who maintain that through mediums has come an understanding that the world is being monitored by some very high-ranking spiritual beings – spiritual masters – and they are preparing the way for the “Maitreya” – a Messianic figure, vaguely equivalent to Christ. The belief in this was so strong that a boy by the name of Jiddu Krishnamurti was selected and promoted as the next Maitreya.

It is hard to fathom how any group of human beings could imagine themselves having the authority to select the Maitreya Messiah. Did they really think it possible to take out of the hands of God what belongs in His jurisdiction?

Well, needless to say, this ill-fated plan of Theosophy’s directors (Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater) fell flat on its face. Jiddhu, in spite of much preparation and grooming, refused in later years to take on the Maitreya role. Perhaps he knew, instinctively, that this was one of those short-sighted human proposals that was doomed to come to nothing.

We could look at the example of Christ: born in a stable, hunted by king Herod, supernatural miracles of healing and other miracles that were proof of His divinity (changing water into wine, walking on water, speaking to the storm and the fish). Could He have been a Messiah, selected and groomed by a group of human beings? No. This had to be the work of the Almighty.

It is worth noting too that Christ managed to fulfill prophecies in the Old Testament that foretold of His First Coming. And as His First Coming was foretold in the Old Testament, so His Second Coming has been foretold and a basic outline given… in the Book of Revelation mainly.

If God is the One doing something, then we can count on it being foretold and fulfilled. And it will be done with an eye to the long-distance future – quite different to how we, with our short-sighted human understanding, could ever plan and do things.
